Professional Profile

Peter McLardy-Smith is the senior consultant in the Oxford Hip and Knee Surgery group. His undergraduate training was in Oxford and St. Bartholomews Hospital, London. He returned to Oxford and then Bristol for his post-graduate training in general surgery. He was appointed as the clinical lecturer in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Oxford to complete his specialist orthopaedic training at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. In 1985 he was awarded the first John Charnley scholarship enabling him to work for one year in a research/clinical fellowship at the University of Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France where he furthered his specialist interest in hip and knee arthritis surgery.

In 1987 he was appointed as a consultant surgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford to work solely in the field of hip and knee arthritis and revision surgery (the first purely specialist appointment in the UK), and he has confined his practise to that specialised field ever since.

He has developed a particularly broad experience in the fields of metal on metal resurfacing of the hip, revision hip surgery and the management of peri-prosthetic infections. He conceived and developed the Oxford Universal Hip, a modular femoral component successfully used in revision surgery for over fifteen years, and has the longest current experience with the Oxford Meniscal Knee replacement.

Peter is an honorary clinical lecturer in orthopaedic surgery to the University of Oxford and has published widely in his field. He has travelled extensively, as an invited guest, to teach, present original data and operate in North and South America, the Middle East, Asia and Australia as well as Europe.
